Tasty Cheese Tour Rakovica
The Municipality of Rakovica is known cheese-producing municipality in the Plitvice Lakes area. Farming is not easy and has never been easy. But we are very lucky there are still people out there wanting to farm. They work hard to be sustained and struggle not get caught up in cheap pricing and low quality products.
Freshness is not the only reason we prefer locally produced foods:
- the foods produced locally are of high quality,
- have low carbon footprint,
- are made in small batches, meaning less or no preservatives and agrochemicals,
- increase food safety - better to have many small producers than a few large ones. A series of extreme weather events make food security increasingly vulnerable. Therefore every single brave initiative of a locally based small food producer is worthy of recognition and support.
Last and not least, the money spent with local producers stays close to that local community and it helps to build the local economy instead of going to foreign corporations outside communities.
Why buy locally produced foods over mass produced products - because it is smarter and healthier choice!

Mona is a family-owned farming and dairy company run by the Turkalj family for more than 15 years, and is one of the few in the region that has successfully addressed numerous challenges faced by smallholder farmers. They own their own large dairy herd and some sheep that are allowed to run free and graze clean pastures, pick and choose the plants that they need for optimum health.
They produce a range of high-quality dairy products that are very worth buying!
While you're in the area, make sure to visit another family farm worthy of your attention - “Eko Klanac” that offers a well-rounded variety of fresh, organic fruit and vegetables. Find out more about the seasonal work on the farm, seasonal fruits and vegetables that retain more nutrients, and the importance of eating with the cycles of nature.
Eating with the cycles of nature is better for our health and promotes much-needed balance with the earth's resources.
