Nature Monuments - Plitvice Caves
Plitvice Lakes National Park boasts with 114 speleological objects, and some of them are so valuable that they have been additionally protected as nature monuments.
Take advantage of the peaceful part of the year and explore the impressive underworld of this protected area. Bats are now fully active and feeding. Female bats have formed maternity colonies and usually give birth to a single pup during this - very sensitive - time of the year.
Young bats are very small (less than an inch) and they feed on mother’s milk. Adult bats will catch thousands of insects each in a night to support the young and themselves. It is of the outmost
importance that maternity colonies are not disturbed (early-to-mid summer depending on the species when bats give birth and rear their young), as well as hibernating bats in winter.
We need to raise awareness about the importance of bats and bat habitat - bats need our help!
If possible, hire a professional guide to get a better picture of the importance and the sensitivity of caves.
