International Bat Night 2025!

Although often looking quite scary, and many have an innate fear of them, bats play an extremely important role in many environments and are totally harmless to people. Take the opportunity and shed away your fears, if you have them, and learn many interesting facts about these importan little creatures.

Usually at this time of the year, female bats are still nursing babies, some youngsters grow fast and are almost full-size; others are still very small. At around three weeks, young bats are already learning to fly and sometimes can be found on the ground as they learn to fly. It is very important now that maternity colonies are not disturbed, same as during the hibernation period.

Plitvice Lakes National Park boasts 21 species of bats, and 114 speleological objects, in many of which bats find refuge. These night fliers play crucial roles in forest regeneration process; they pollinate numerous plants and disperse seeds, as well as control insect populations as the primary predators of night-flying insects.

In the immediate vicinity of the Plitvice Lakes NP you can find one more valuable natural site and bat habitat - Barac Caves in Rakovica, permanently protected as a significant landscape since 29 March 2016, and highly worth the visit.
