GWT2P Nordic Walking HealthZones

It is no accident that our main GWT2P poster design features our 2Parks and a Nordic walker enjoying a sport with high fitness and health benefits!

!!Beware of your direct sun exposure!!

Nordic walking was originally developed as summer training for the top cross-country skiers, and now is a popular sport for all, regardless of age and sex. Walking with poles activates not just muscles below the waist but also all of the muscles of the upper body as well, combining cardiovascular exercise with a vigorous muscle workout for our shoulders, arms, core and legs, and turns our walk into a total body workout with great health benefits:

activates 80% to 90% of the body's muscles;
- burns up to 46% more calories than regular walking and helps with weight loss;
- decreases "bad" LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, fat mass, depression, anxiety;
- increases "good" HDL cholesterol, endurance, and cardiovascular fitness (strengthens our heart and lungs);
- increases aerobic effect by up to 25% compared to regular walking
- boosts our circulation and lymph drainage
- tones upper arms, shoulders and back muscles, increases muscle strength, flexibility, and helps keep our bones strong
- improves lateral mobility of the spine
- develops core stability and strength
- promotes an upright posture.

Take advantage of your holiday in GWT2P regional destination to practise Nordic walking. Trail options are plentiful and we can recommend a few:

- almost all forest trails in our 2Parks are suitable for walking with poles, so take poles with you;
- Debeljača trim trail is approx. 3.5 km long and takes you from the town of Bihac to the historic site  of the medieval and later Ottoman town of Sokolac, and back to Bihac;
- 2 km long educational trail Mlinica along the river Korana Canyon in Rakovica can also be an exciting option for walking with poles; starting points can be either the Village of Dreznik Grad or Catrnja. The Rakovica Tourist Board has provided info boards and signposts;
- our main GWT2P recreational trail is simply perfect for Nordic walking, and you can explore sections with circle tours: from Plitvice Lakes NP, the Village of Rastovača to the Village of Željava  (near the Base) and back or via the Village of Arapov dol up towards the Village of Rastovača (depending of the fitness level walk can take up to 4-5 hours with stops); from Bihac up on the Una-Korana plateau, via the Village of Zavalje to the Village of Vedro polje back to Bihac (depending of the fitness level walk can take up to 3 hours with stops);
- a lovely trail up Mrsinj Hill near Korenica is also a great option. The trail is maintained by the MC "Mrsinj" from Korenica, has an altitude difference of 440 meters and will take you to the former seat of Krbava bishops and the dukes of Frankopan with a beautiful lookout point above Korenica.

Spring, summer, autumn or winter - it is always the right time for Nordic walking!
