Our heart is our most important muscle, and it will get more efficient and healthier if we lead an active life. Cardiovascular exercise involves the use of large muscles in a repetitive fashion, utilizing a heart rate range anywhere from 60 to 85 percent of your maximum heart rate. When we perform a cardio workout, blood flow is directed toward working muscles and away from areas that aren't doing much work which results in increased blood flow, and blood volume returning to the heart. As the heart registers a larger blood volume, over time the left ventricle adapts and enlarges. This larger cavity can hold more blood, and eject more blood per beat, even at rest.
It's never too late to start exercising; even taking a brisk walk for 30 minutes a day can make a big difference, it can improve the function of our heart by making it more efficient and our blood vessels more flexible, and the greater flexibility of the blood vessels make them more resistant to the buildup of plaque a known contributor to heart disease. Making our heart more efficient is one of the best things we can do for our health.
