1st Plitvice Film Festival - an outdoor festival about nature and its conservation!
19.9. - 22.9.2019, Camp Korana, National Park Plitvica Lakes
(in case of rain, the festival will move into the enclosed areas of the camp)
The festival is greatly dedicated to young people with the important task of encouraging continuous learning and raising awareness of nature's crucial importance to our lives.
The short film competition for children and young people up to the age of 18 has been launched. You will also be able to participate in the selection of the best one out of the 12 selected films on the last day of the festival when all films will be shown.

In addition to young people, the Festival also brings the works of renowned film directors:
The Salt of the Earth by Wim Wenders i Juliano Ribeiro Salgado, a documentary portrait of Brazilian photographer Sebastião Ribeiro Salgado who has witnessed some of the major events of the last 40 years of our history; from international conflicts to starvation and exodus, but also wild fauna and flora, pristine territories, and wonderful landscapes. His photographic project is great tribute to the Earth's beauty.

Racing Extinction by Louiea Psihoyosa, impressive and alarming documentary is showing the hidden world of endangered species and the race to protect them against mass extinction. The world premiere in NY on Sep 20, 2014 has attracted the attention of the world public on the alarming situation in nature and the ongoing process of mass extinction and climate change that we now call the climate crisis. The film was nominated for a couple of distinguished awards, including the Emmy Award.

The Oscar-winning, superb animated film The Man Who Planted Trees by Frédéric Back, is a film version of Jean Giono's fable of the same name about a shepherd who single-handedly plants an entire forest.

The Ice on Fire is an eye-opening documentary directed by Leila Conners and narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio. The documentary premiered on May 22, 2019 at the Cannes Film Festival; a prominent Croatian scientist Staša Puškarić Ph.D. also participated in making the film thanks to his significant research in the field of environmental science.
The film has attracted a great deal of public interest, addressing the climate crisis and environmental pollution and offering more progressive solutions to slow down our escalating environmental crisis.

The Green Bloodstream of Croatia by a Croatian scientist and great nature lover Goran Šafarek, is an excellent film dedicated to the beauty and the importance of watercourses.

Brilliant Macedonian authors Tamara Kotevska and Ljubomir Stefanov present a remarkable Honeyland film about the last woman who utilises ancient beekeeping traditions to cultivate honey in the mountains of Macedonia. Her peaceful existence is thrown into upheaval by the neighboring family.The film won three awards at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival including the Grand Jury Prize for documentary.

Forest ecologist Suzanne Simard (Canada) and a German forester and author Peter Wohlleben have been researching and observing the communication between the trees for decades. A great documentary Intelligent Trees explores that interaction between trees from the perspectives of scientists and foresters.

We will also see a shocking and deeply impressive film Walkabout from 1971, by Nicolas Roeg (1928- 2018).
A father, a geologist takes his daughter and younger son to the wilderness of Australia with the worst plan possible. The two urban children are left alone in the wild, and a rescue comes in the form of an Aboriginal boy (David Gulpilil) who shows them how to survive.

Special dedication is given to Sir David Attenborough who helped invent the natural history documentary as we know it today. The new documentary series by the BBC will also include the Plitvice Lakes, and there is a great chance that Sir Attenborough might come during the Film Festival. :)
